Yes I have been away for a while and my lovely friends through me a psychedelic party. Was great fun they had elephant avatars too cute. Rosalee Icanardi built the set and its gorgeous. Here are some pics and a video at the end.
Special thanks to Rosalee, Storm, Bridget and our fab DJ Siani.
One of the most popular pastimes in Second Life is caring for, feeding and breeding virtual animals. Over the years these animals have improved and developed and a whole community of Second Life breeders and traders has emerged.
KittyCatS! ™ are highly interactive cats that can be petted and cuddled. They will follow you and play with you. There are lots of breeds and sizes, including teacup, toy, petite, normal and MegaPuss. There are also special collection cats that will breed one unique baby. It is compelling and addictive and fascinating. http://kittycats.biz.
What is fascinating is the way in which these cats become real. When they are born an imprinting occurs and this sets the scene for reality to step in.
They become attached. They follow you and talk in local chat. They need feeding or they get sick, they sleep a lot. You give them affection, breed them and end up with baby cats. Their lineage is recorded. They develop a personality.
Yes I have to give up. I’ve tried everything to make 8 gigs of RAM work on my computer without success. People at Firestorm they have Jira where you can post your problems but I didn’t really get anywhere. I tried everything. I’m running 64 bit windows with 4 gigs of RAM and it works, for now. But I have lost confidence in it. My current system is over 5 years old, so it’s ready for replacement. So I’m going to buy a new PC.
Base is an XPS 8700 i7 – 4770 4th Gen 3.7 GHz, which can be overclocked to 3.9 GHz.
This is the current fastest processor around.
Memory 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz – 4 DIMMs can be expanded to 32 gigs
Video Card AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5 I looked this card up and its pretty good, 2 gigs is good enough memory
(I’m keeping my monitor unless I decide to have two)
Hard Drive 2TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive + Intel SRT 32GB SSD Cache 2 terabytes is good for these days, the solid state Cache speeds things up. I have 3 TB on my USB drives
It has lots of room for expansion. Cost €1,239 inc taxes and shipping
have to wait for new ID so can’t buy until the end of May
I just spent all my savings on upgrading my computer, primarily so i could be up to date with Second Life. I upgraded to a 64 bit system with 8 gigs of RAM which is probably pretty standard now. Everything works fine EXCEPT SL. The system freezes after a few minutes. So I tried
1. Using recommended graphics drivers as per wiki : no difference. Tried different drivers …no good.
2. Spent hours testing RAM with no difference. Firestorm works with 4 gigs of RAM which makes having 64 bits pointless.
3. Reinstalled Windows and just installed FS, no difference.
4. Posted a jira to FS site no one has answered. This could take months.
Yesterday I spent hours researching, reading forums and posting to them. One thread decided it was my power supply that needed upgrading. Not doing that would mean dismantling the PC. This is very frustrating.
I am able to go into SL providing I have my graphics set to low. I managed to do my shift.
I was crashing so much Siani created a body double for me. But this is not funny when it come down to it. My SL experience with low graphics is not good. All I can do is wait for the Jira response. It is very frustrating especially as everything is supposed to be better. Everything else on my computer works fine its just SL.
One of the features of Photoshop is the ability to make the background transparent. It is then possible to paste the image on top of any background. This was how I was able to have my avatar in the Google offices. This was done by taking the first picture in front of a “green screen” a single colour background to facilitate its removal.
I am now able to do this with video.
Pretty good for my first attempt. I will be able to run a movie as a background. This means that one of my goals, that of bringing sl into rl is closer to being realised.
My choreographer friend Arabella has already come up with an idea of Halloween dances performing in front of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. She needed to see her video again so here it is.
My place is an island and I don’t have a house I have a tent where my office is. The first thing you come to is First Base. in true British fashion when in foreign parts i raised the flag (think the psychology of this is self evident) knowing everything thing else would follow as of birthright. jeez its scary how often that went on. Anyway First Base, then plan my conquest.
Tent in the middle as an office: There is an old wooden chair that has a gorgeous sitting animation. Next to it.my desk is oldish but black. On the top shelf is a bonsai, in the middle is a sculpture (one of my Exs). On the desk itself is a working desk lamp, a steam punk laptop that displays pictures (got that from a daredevil pilot I made a video for) , in front of the cactus is my old laptop lol.The seat is African There is a wooden crate of books on the floor. I like the asymmetry of the two oriental carpets. Champagne chilling.
on the floor by the chaise longue, that has two relaxing poses, are three books with turnable pages with sound and animation. love them great pictures too. Can be read from the chaise longue which is where I often relax. It can double as a consultation couch. My grass plant nods knowingly.
Outside is my English Area a gazebo with pets a horse a bee hive.
I have a meditation area witThere is a meditation area with four seats. There is a picture of HH Dalai Lama. I used to live with the Tibetans in their exile home of Daramsala. There is a set of singing bowls pure sounds associated with chakras different tones from each bowl. A prayer wheel spins chanting om. Prayer flags along the top.
There is a pond with two swans; a statue of the Buddha is under the waterfall. Japanese floating candles.
here is a picture of the underwater world the octopus is well camoflaged
And there was the previous resident of the island who was shipwrecked here:
And then there is the camping area with many animations:
Women fall in “love” with me in second life and it always turns out not to be “love”. Not how I define it anyway. I have an attractive avatar, I can be witty and fun in chat. I am intelligent. Well read and intellectual be an asset at a dinner party and can rough it in a swamp. As you can see from my history i have had 4 partners in second life 1 & 2 are here and 3 & 4 are here. potential 5th is listed here and I fell in love with her alt. She told me she loved me, they all did and I believed them. Well to be honest I didn’t believe the last one but was too enamored to turn her down. How foolish was that? Knew in my gut she wasn’t IN love with me. AND OMG she is the same avatar as Wynter! So You Knew, you IDIOT! but she is one of the most wonderful people in sl, fucking hard to top. and i blew it. Told my daughter and my close friends omg what a fool they will think me. AND I am lost and alone again. Fool. Where am I going wrong? I am loveable I think, warm and caring. I must have something to initiate such a reaction in the first place. AND I have not done all the chasing either……..
So there is something wrong with me, its the only conclusion I can come to. But what and how can I change? I feel like a fool. Maybe I should just wear my jester costume all the time. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME????? I give up on second life. They have all made a fool out of me, publicly.
It just hasn’t happened. However when was the last time you paid to listen to music? When was the last tine you paid to download music? i have watched all 2013 movies. Those I haven’t been able to stream I have downloaded. [must confess dowloaded Anna Karanina ….thats a keeper] for free. I have a 22 inch flat screen on my oak coffee table. I have a decent computer. At the momet I am working as a supervisor to my host gf and the Dj Larai Dreamcatcher, a blues expert. Her set is 2 hours. There’s me dancing on the left in my Clockwork Orange Tee shirt. i’ll pause there. Read on.
In January 2010, a few months after the Iranian uprising, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech, “Remarks on Internet Freedom,” at the Newseum in Washington. “The spread of information networks is forming a new nervous system for our planet,” she told her audience. “When something happens in Haiti or Hunan, the rest of us learn about it in real time—from real people.” Clinton invoked the same emphasis on direct communication—media without mediation—which Shamberg celebrated in video and Sullivan in Twitter, and the same notion of a global mind which McLuhan and Ryan found in Teilhard. ”Now, in many respects, information has never been so free,” Clinton continued, agreeing with countercultural entrepreneur Stewart Brand, who declared in 1984 that “information wants to be free.”Clinton’s optimism was tempered, though. “We must also recognize that these technologies are not an unmitigated blessing,” she continued. “These tools are also being exploited to undermine human progress and political rights.” Beyond that, we should heed Vassi’s warning and recognize the threat that we will be seduced by our tools and their false but persistent promise of revolutionary change without our active political effort. These information technologies can contribute to the success of political movements, but not if their users see them as replacements for political life.
information technology cannot replace political life. I disagree. I am an Electronic Pamphleteer
cyber-utopianism has been summed up neatly by an RSA Animate video The Internet in Society dispelling the myth of what is called iPod liberalism that more technology = Democracy as a matter of course. Just as users / bloggers are being vociferous, totalitarian governments are using this information to help entrench themselves futher. In Thailand there is a support the king web site where users are asked to identify and “out” those speaking against the monarchy. Those web sites are then blocked. Its a depressing view. However I still believe that Information is God and that the ability to produce social change is possible via the internet. Perhaps not through protest but through the likes of CollaborativeConsumption (dot) com see TED.com video where capitalism and our current economic system is being undermined by individuals sharing goods and services. Cited in Time Magazines top ten as things that will change the world. I will still blog and tweet my protests because of my age (63) but true change will only occur when we remove the profit motive from western ideology.
Here is the RSA Animate movie
Iranian Twittergate brouaua where Twitter lost lts social integrity as a public -platform.what a shame “another imperialist lackey” Love twitter posted 4500 tweets 1400 followrers. not many but somehing. I have everything mostly on auto using my bots. because…….
i live the life of a cyber-utopian. I have very fast internet 30% faster than average. i do EVERYTHING on line. I work rest and play in cyberspace. After a brush with cancer I don’t go out much. My job is online I register and host gTLDs, design web sites make videos PersonalDomains.net the aim of personal domains is that everyone on the internet should have thier own domain. I do it for cost.I can be paid in any currency then have it transferred to my rl bank to take out cash INSTANTLY. I can be paid for a job and witin 15 minutes later I could be down the pub buynig drinks. 3 days for a cheque to clear. pfftt. I’m on Skypes 24/7 just as I would be in rl with a landline. ALL my facebook friends have access to it.
I am a dad.
I have an online gf, we meet in second life clubs and Skype. My business partner is in Sydney We talk everyday email and exchage files. we collaburate on our main site AvatarCreations.net which does what it says on the box for acadmics and professional people.. ! have “physical” online work as a host in two blues clubs. I have about 15 friends I see regularly 4 or 5m close. My work pays for clothes for my avatar and for my island. I am learning how to manage a blues club.I listen to lectures and meditate in The Buddhist Center. Sometimes I struggle a tad but its a new business and I live on disability
i use the internet,. one night firefox was a bit sluggish. I had 64 tabs open. I read, I design, I make animations and movies (300 and something on youtube). I have news headlines the BBC on tap AND the blogospere. There are no restrictions on my use. Now tou know wht i opened with what I did.
The Huffington Post is a newspaper I subscribe to and comment on. This weekend was a TEDWeekend where various authors (4) were asked to comment on the following video but there are two remarkable coincidences. Firstly I put up the same video on DudeStarship dot com 5 days previously. Secondly two days before, I quoted the same video in starting a TED conversation. Thirdly, despite not being able to count, I put up a new blog dealing with serendipity the day before including an image taken from the video. I was notified of the TEDWeekend yesterday. You would think that I would be pleased at how in step with events I am . Watch and read:
The first commentator I read concluded:
Much work remains on the research I discuss here; through future waves of the online study, a rich, academically sound understanding of how social media and mobile technology consumers use the technology, how they interact with their network, and how they make purchase decisions based on social media input will be developed. At the end of this project, I will defend my dissertation to earn my Ph.D. in marketing. But beyond that, the goal is to provide a rich contribution on how social media and mobile technology usage by “Connected Consumers” is associated with psychological and technology factors.
“Much work remains…” .So many of us are already living what needs to be researched, according to his view, before we should embrace it ,what utter drivel A study, a two year dissertation for a Ph.D ,will be hopelessly out of date by the time it is published. Marketing? OMG what a waste of time. He is already out of date in his chosen field. Where is collaborative consumption ? See my earlier post last December. Failure to do proper TED research. Failure to read Time magazine that lists collaborative consumption as one of the ten things that will change the world. Failure to see how things are changing (RSAnimate Networks, Motivation, Outrospection). The Did You Know? YouTube video of 2008 states quite clearly that buying habits are more influenced by Blog recommendations and technological word of mouth than advertising. “Like” something on Facebook and it can be viral so this comment, (That video has had more than 15 million views) peed me off. Two videos one academic / TED one Social media BOTH 2012.
The Second Commentator said this
The good news is that you can work anywhere, anytime. The bad news is that you can work anywhere, anytime. It’s hard to know when work ends if you interact with global teams across time zones or you don’t leave an office to signify the end of the day.
You can work anywhere anytime is both a good thing and a bad thing. In English this is a) meaningless and b) presumes no self discipline, no technological management and no self control. Children often act in a stimulus response type of way. Has not this person heard of answering machines where you do not have to respond because technology can? Oh we both know I could go on. I have different email addresses that ….oh nvm they probably have two. I got peed off at the suggestion i couldn’t handle 24/7 global technology, in different time zones, that I was a child. Never heard of multitasking either. The idea of one person working 18 hours has already been tackled by some countries nationally by having 3 people work 6 hours and collaborating. See Microsoft > putting a PowerPoint presentation on line and configuring sharing with a team working in their time zone..Networks! :> Stupid comment.
The third commentator said and I will not bore you with the full article :
My years of personal experience and professional practice and research have led me to one rule that governs all of my electronic communication: I never email about anything important. (The same rule applies to text messaging, tweeting, social networking, etc.)
What century is this person living in? Presumably her article was written with a quill pen and delivered by hand. This is denying everything that 21st Century Networks are all about. An emergency with your offspring, friend, colleague, client not at “home”? Use semaphore? I was horrified and very peed off.
Robots vs Avatars : Social interaction can be better facilitated through a robot or through an avatar?
An avatar I shall be referring to is one created in Second Life (secondlife.com), a global 3D cybercommunity discussed in an article on cyberculture (onlybrackets.hubpages.com). Firstly an avatar is capable of a far greater range of gestures and interactions than a robot. It can be modeled and dressed to suit any virtual or real environment. If it is winter where one user is they can mimic the real world and dress accordingly. An avatar is ideal for communication at a distance. Real family’s exist in second life and I have witnessed 3rd generation interaction. Young avatars can interact with grandma avatars. Grandma will assist the youth in creating their avatar thus creating a sense of identity and ownership. Interactive play goes on. Currently a 16 year old age limit is in force but could this not be reduced?
Communication can be through voice (microphone) or for those able through typing in a chat box.
As a learning / teaching aide an avatar may attend programmed classes, a gym for example and will be expected to follow a regime in the real world. By engaging in a virtual group activity as an avatar peer support can be had. It would be possible to mimic an overweight avatar, programmed with the users bmi and, as they progress in the real world the avatar would change shape. Virtual classrooms with programmed study exist.
An avatar is also your cyber representative able to meet new people and explore new environments. An avatar is ideal for those with mobility difficulties.
This is all on screen therefore would fall short of having the physical interaction that a robot can provide. We anthropomorphize robots how much easier this is with an avatar. I may own a mobile phone that can do a Gallic shrug yet dancing with a friend on a mobile phone in a blues club is better done with an avatar.
But are they two different things and therefore not comparable? A robot is an independent entity its true but what if an avatar had artificial intelligence?
My answer to this question is in favour of the avatar because generally it is free. Robots are incredibly expensive and the construction of such a mechanical device uses far more resources than warrant the benefits. Ideally the answer is both. However I realise now after seeing the TEDWeekend that the question is totally meaningless to mainstream as exemplified by the above. They just do not understand the technology nor how to use it. It saddens me but ignorance always pisses me off especially by so called “experts” or “leaders”.
I have an acquaintance who writes a blog I admire. She wrote a post on flatterbots . These are bots that go around and will flatter you and then demand money. I commented as a flatterblogbot in fun, flattering her and asking that she put up an ad for me as “payment” but I also created a wordpress blog where I discussed flattery, its divisive nature and included a wonderful video of a flash site I had.
