New System and I love it!

Yes its super. Great processor oodles of RAM and a good graphics card. Second Life flies without any jerkiness. But as i realised many years ago the front end aka monitor is one of the most important things. I bought a computer in 1994 spent over half of the total cost on the 17 inch monitor which I still have. I have a 22 inch with a blemish on the bottom but its still usable. I didn’t “need” a new monitor. BUT this was a computer upgrade so it had to be better than my last system. I was scared about spending so much money on a new 27 inch monitor. I debated whether to buy a higher resolution than 1920 x 1080 but the price doubled. And now I am glad I didn’t. As my old 22 inch runs at 1920 x 1080 I discovered I can merge the two into one without any disparity in the resolutions. There is no need to resize any window for the smaller to larger monitor and vice versa. One screen slides seamlessly into the other. In the video below you will see second life captured over two monitors seamlessly. The clarity of the new monitor is great and trust me 27 inches is far bigger than 22 inches. Having trouble with the capture but below gives you an idea. YouTube isn’t big enough LOL. Heres the capture but it doesn’t do it justice….

Freebies and domains

(all links are in bold and open a new window) Its funny I spent a few posts warning you about freebies now I am giving you some. Firstly let me give you a Freebie. If you need to capture ANY image on your computer screem then get 4Shared Shot it is awesome. You can capture anything on your screen. It sits in your task bar tray. Another great facility is Zoom.it You can have any image on the net and zoomify it.

Look at this!Just get the url of the image, copy it then paste it into http://zoom.it. Get the embed code and paste it into your web site or blog. If you want Deep Zoom composer the free program is here! You will probably need a windows ID. You can see it in action here
One thing I love about wordpress is the free themes and plugins. Most things on the Internet are free BUT as I have said before Domains are NOT free NOR IS HOSTING. So UseMe.biz.

Free Graphics program that I use a lot is Expression Design and I use Expression Web for editing html. Both great programs and free from Microsoft .

I don’t know what anti virus program you use but Microsoft Security Essentials which is free, is excellent.  . In four years I have had no virus.

Here is a list of my Domains. At €10 a year why not? 21st Century Networks,( 2stcn a short form for convenience), is the global site for my domains. Avatar Creations is to provide a professional service for business and academics using Second Life, a 3D Immersive cybercommunity. Family Blogs does what it says, every family should have a blog. with a colleague we run two radio stations. Freedom Radio is in process. Most of the cyber domains do what they say on the box. Dude Starship is my avatar.

Hosting and domain registration, sub domains are 2ndlife, Irish Secure, nhys.biz (wix), secondlifehosting.com (wixx) ImACoolChick, and my virtual space. mygf and mybf are for those who want a sub domain eg wynter.mygf.biz, dude.mybf.biz

My Blues sites are still in the embryo stage, I have yet to contact the DJs and the hosts to get their take on the blues in second life. I’ll put them up on secondlifeblues.com. I think it will be really interesting.

i have hyperconnectivity.me and familyblogs.me to add to the mix.

Dunno, pjfbncyl, this blog, omgg, oknp, jnanabodhi (my Buddhist site), onlymoi, are all personal domains. Registering domains is my hobby. As I have my own hosting company it costs nothin to host. I generally put up a front page then a blog in a sub directory. omgg.net took 20 minutes to do the front page and about 2 hours to do blog.omgg.net i love 4 lette domains that have a meaning. omgg has loads:

  • oh my good god
  • oh my golly gosh
  • oh my gossip girl
  • oh my gay god (?)
  • oh my goodness gracious
  • extra emphasis for omg

I have a passion for creating web sites and blogs. If you want this animation and tune you can download the zip file here by right clicking and save link

You may have noticed I also love making videos. My youtube channei is youtube.com/philipjamesbryan I also have another video site TechnologyIsMe.blip.tv

IF YOU NEED ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE then be cautious. I run Microsoft Security Essentials I find other anti virus software a pain. This is free and is designed by microsoft for microsoft operating systems. Makes sense to me.

I use free web sites to test, advertise and to see what they can do. I have :

  • Webnode : I like webnode it uses a nice interface. If you want to practice go for it. Here is a site I made BUT if your reguster with them YOU DO NOT GET CPANEL (control panel) So you are severly limited with what you can do. Great for practice no good for permanent.
  • Weebly : Uses the same modular sustem as Webnode . It works well and I have an advertising site there. You can view it here but I haven’t finished yet. Been getting 3 emails a day asking me to upgrade. No htank you. No control panel only the modules.
  • Wix : I love theinterface its html 5 far superior to the others. I bought two templates I liked it so much. http://secondlifehosting.com BUT AGAIN NO control panel. I registerd that domain so I could use the template for http://2ndlife.biz it is a mirror BUT I have control panel with 2ndlife.biz with unlimited emails, sub domains etc etc.
  • WordPress will offer to host your domain however if it does you do not get s self hosted site with plugins. You are limited. I registered two so i could get the dot me addresses eCollege.me and hyperconnectivity.me its expensive too.

These sites are all well and good but they end up producing the same kind of web site. Always ask can I create sub domains and the important one EMAILS! You want to have full control over them. The sites above are a blog. REMEMBER A DOMAIN IS FOR A LONG TIME NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS ………hardy har har but you get my drift.

The Internet is not static. However you can be sure the generic top level domains, dot com, biz, info, net amd org are not going away. We have seen a major revolution in the programming language of the web, html5. I want a control panel to CONTROL my domain. I do not want someone else to control it. I want to control emails too.

&nbsp
You Can get a free copy of Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 2 Here when you create an Adobe account.

Thats about it you should be OK for now. You should get a Domain shouldn’t you?

cyber-utopianism

clockwork

It just hasn’t happened. However when was the last time you paid to listen to music? When was the last tine you paid to download music? i have watched all 2013 movies. Those I haven’t been able to stream I have downloaded. [must confess dowloaded Anna Karanina ….thats a keeper] for free. I have a 22 inch flat screen on my oak coffee table. I have a decent computer. At the momet I am working as a supervisor to my host gf and the Dj Larai Dreamcatcher, a blues expert. Her set is 2 hours. There’s me dancing on the left in my Clockwork Orange Tee shirt. i’ll pause there. Read on.

through some research into a professor I cam across Cyber-Utopianism before the Internet a very interesting account. When we reached 2010 o perked up :

In January 2010, a few months after the Iranian uprising, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech, “Remarks on Internet Freedom,” at the Newseum in Washington. “The spread of information networks is forming a new nervous system for our planet,” she told her audience. “When something happens in Haiti or Hunan, the rest of us learn about it in real time—from real people.” Clinton invoked the same emphasis on direct communication—media without mediation—which Shamberg celebrated in video and Sullivan in Twitter, and the same notion of a global mind which McLuhan and Ryan found in Teilhard. ”Now, in many respects, information has never been so free,” Clinton continued, agreeing with countercultural entrepreneur Stewart Brand, who declared in 1984 that “information wants to be free.”Clinton’s optimism was tempered, though. “We must also recognize that these technologies are not an unmitigated blessing,” she continued. “These tools are also being exploited to undermine human progress and political rights.” Beyond that, we should heed Vassi’s warning and recognize the threat that we will be seduced by our tools and their false but persistent promise of revolutionary change without our active political effort. These information technologies can contribute to the success of political movements, but not if their users see them as replacements for political life.

information technology cannot replace political life. I disagree. I am an Electronic Pamphleteer

i commented:

cyber-utopianism has been summed up neatly by an RSA Animate video The Internet in Society dispelling the myth of what is called iPod liberalism that more technology = Democracy as a matter of course. Just as users / bloggers are being vociferous, totalitarian governments are using this information to help entrench themselves futher. In Thailand there is a support the king web site where users are asked to identify and “out” those speaking against the monarchy. Those web sites are then blocked. Its a depressing view. However I still believe that Information is God and that the ability to produce social change is possible via the internet. Perhaps not through protest but through the likes of CollaborativeConsumption (dot) com see TED.com video where capitalism and our current economic system is being undermined by individuals sharing goods and services. Cited in Time Magazines top ten as things that will change the world. I will still blog and tweet my protests because of my age (63) but true change will only occur when we remove the profit motive from western ideology.

Here is the RSA Animate movie

Iranian Twittergate brouaua where Twitter lost lts social integrity as a public -platform.what a shame “another imperialist lackey” Love twitter posted 4500 tweets 1400 followrers. not many but somehing. I have everything mostly on auto using my bots. because…….

i live the life of a cyber-utopian. I have very fast internet 30% faster than average. i do EVERYTHING on line. I work rest and play in cyberspace. After a brush with cancer I don’t go out much. My job is online I register and host gTLDs, design web sites make videos PersonalDomains.net the aim of personal domains is that everyone on the internet should have thier own domain. I do it for cost.I can be paid in any currency then have it transferred to my rl bank to take out cash INSTANTLY. I can be paid for a job and witin 15 minutes later I could be down the pub buynig drinks. 3 days for a cheque to clear. pfftt. I’m on Skypes 24/7 just as I would be in rl with a landline. ALL my facebook friends have access to it.

I am a dad.

I am learning how to manage a blues club.I listen to lectures and meditate in The Buddhist Center. Sometimes I struggle a tad but its a new business and I live on disability

Banking Its A Scandal

Is there a scandal? The Libor scandal:>

The Libor scandal is a series of fraudulent actions connected to the Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) and also the resulting investigation and reaction. The Libor is an average interest rate calculated through submissions of interest rates by major banks in London. The scandal arose when it was discovered that banks were falsely inflating or deflating their rates so as to profit from trades, or to give the impression that they were more creditworthy than they were.[3] Libor underpins approximately $350 trillion in derivatives. It is controlled by the British Bankers’ Association (BBA).[4]

The banks are supposed to submit the actual interest rates they are paying, or would expect to pay, for borrowing from other banks. The Libor is supposed to be the total assessment of the health of the financial system because if the banks being polled feel confident about the state of things, they report a low number and if the member banks feel a low degree of confidence in the financial system, they report a higher interest rate number. In June 2012, multiple criminal settlements by Barclays Bank revealed significant fraud and collusion by member banks connected to the rate submissions, leading to the scandal.[5][6][7]

Because Libor is used in U.S. derivatives markets, an attempt to manipulate Libor is an attempt to manipulate U.S. derivatives markets, and thus a violation of American law. Since mortgages, student loans, financial derivatives, and other financial products often rely on Libor as a reference rate, the manipulation of submissions used to calculate those rates can have significant negative effects on consumers and financial markets worldwide.

On 27 July 2012, the Financial Times published an article by a former trader which stated that Libor manipulation had been common since at least 1991.[8] Further reports on this have since come from the BBC[9][10] and Reuters.[11] On 28 November 2012, the Finance Committee of the Bundestag held a hearing to learn more about this.[12]

George Osbourne at JP Morgan offices.

AND its JP Morgan who suffers or do they? :>

America’s scandal-racked JP Morgan Chase smashed Wall Street’s forecasts yesterday with the help of a revival in so-called simple banking.

The bank, the world’s biggest by assets, has been reeling in the wake of a trading scandal in which Bruno Iksil, nicknamed the London Whale, lost $5.8bn (£3.6bn) through derivatives trades.

Yesterday, however, a boom in simple mortgage lending helped the bank to roar back and post a $1.4bn rise in third-quarter post-tax profits, which came in at $5.7bn.

The bank’s earnings per share of $1.40 were well ahead of analysts’ forecasts of $1.21, and the 34 per cent rise in profits came in a traditionally quiet quarter for earnings.

Simple banking simple mortgage lending, seems to me “simple” equals the ordinary person. AND:>

The Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group could receive a major discount to possible UK libor-rigging fines given each lender is substantially owned by the British taxpayer, legal experts have told the IBTimes UK.

RBS, which is 83 percent owned by the government, is said to be within days of agreeing a settlement with US and UK authorities that could mean around £500m ($785m/€577m) in fines. Lloyds, which is 41 percent owned by the taxpayer, is one of a number of banks being investigated by US and UK authorities for its role in the scandal but has yet to reach a settlement.

JP Morgan is the biggest bank in the world with assets of $2 trillion. Who owns it? Mainly the private investment group The Vanguard Group. Which means Not Us. Its in Private hands. No doubt the top 1% in America. Do they pay fines? Do they suffer losses? No. Do we? Yes. Its not right AND its not fair. The Poor get Poorer The Rich get Richer Everybody Knows. No one is doing anything about it.

how to tell if your agency is bullshitting you about social media

By • Sep 7th, 2009 • Category: Lead Story

So you’ve finally decided that you need to get into this strange, unfamiliar world of Social Media everyone’s talking about. I haven’t got a bloody choice, you grumble. My boss met the MD of our closest competitor the other day, and he was going on and on and on about Facebook. My boss was caught red-faced when he asked who the author of “the Face book” was.

It feels a little like that time when Spice Girls ruled the world and you were forced into listening to their shrieks about girl power everywhere you went, doesn’t it? Not to make you feel any more vintage than you already feel, but the Spice Girls domination was about 10 years ago.

You find yourself inviting your agency to ask for a presentation on Social Media and a proposal on how your brand can be marketed in this medium. Considering your minimal knowledge of this medium, how do you know if your agency is bullshitting you or not? Well let me, the web designer/advertising suit/ blogger/ digital strategist, tell you how.

1 | The habitual Googler
If you find yourself being shown 50 slides of social media statistics and 3 slides on execution ideas, you know that your agency knows as much as you do – that the medium is important, but they don’t know what the hell to do in that medium.

2 | The social media channel becomes the solution
A common recommendation goes something like this, “We will set a blog up, a Twitter account, and a Facebook fan page!” They don’t identify the problem you have in this medium, they don’t prescribe the solution as a result of not knowing the problem to begin with, but strangely enough, they have array of social media channels to recommend to you. Ask them this question – what do I do on my blog, Twitter account and Facebook fan page?

And no darling, like how your customers do not rush home to watch your TV commercials airing at 7pm, your customers online will not visit your blog to listen to you talk about you.

3 | Using plural with social media channels

Run the moment your agency says “Twitters”.

4 | Using buzz words
Run EVEN FASTER the moment your agency says “New Media”.  I agree with what consultant Marc Shelkin says about this term – it is used by agencies who haven’t realized that it isn’t new any more and don’t know what to call projects that aren’t print.

Social media marketing isn’t as complicated as empirical formula unlike what Ivory Tower wannabies want you to think.
Source: Preparatory Chemistry

5 | Spewing social media theories
If your agency’s leading man is too busy penning articles about social media and his theories on trade publications and dissing competitors off with words and not actual works, you should evaluate why you’ve engaged this agency in the first place. The problem with the social media theories penned by Ivory Tower wannabies is that in this unique medium, application is crucial for success. Try sending your boss a 3,000-word article from your agency as proof of a successful social media campaign. Let me know if he/ she buys that bullshit.

6 | Quoting the big boys
A common habit of agencies is to quote the likes of Jeremy Owyang, Brian Solis and Peter Kim one slide before the slide where they tell you “We will set a blog up, a Twitter account, and a Facebook fan page!”. Again, ask them this question – what do I do on my blog, Twitter account and Facebook fan page? Special thanks to my partner-in-crime Tania, for this point.

7 | They hire a blogger, and not a communicator, to be your digital strategist
Your 55-year-old Aunt Amy has a blog talking about her two dogs, Snoopy and Miffy. Will you hand her a 100 grand to market your brand online?

Anyone has anymore to add?
