Digital Forces

It was my birthday yesterday :

So I made a video, but I gave myself a domain as a present. It’s called Digital Forces (dot) net. And I like it a lot, maybe the best site I have designed this year.  It has a chat feature too. So go have a look and tell me what you think. The chat button is on the bottom right.

Article

I’ve written an article giving my background and what I think of OlderCitizens blogging. Trying to get it published, here it is: Any age can learn to blog and chat about sl which I do. The video at the end  is filmed with two avatars dancing on a record. . I will be publishing an sl post soon. I will be spreading the word to older citizens. Please comment I need the feedback.

Older Citizens Blogging

About

The purpose of this hub is to get noticed. As an older citizen I feel marginalised as so many other older citizens do. The purpose of my teaching blog is to help older citizens have a voice. I am 67 years old and feel in many ways to be in my prime.

Spammy?

I write domains as “example dot com” when I want to tell people of a site where there is no need for a link. We sub vocalise when we read which is a memory aid. Of course when we say a web address this is how we say it. It is appropriate when an html link is not appropriate. My first gTLD (global top level domain) is IrishSecure dot com and I have had it since 1998. You can visit it if you like but there is no need for a link. There is also the practice in some platforms and blogs that if you put in example.com it automatically becomes a clickable link. Maybe its idiosyncratic but there seems to be no research on how to remember a web address? It would be easy to set up an experiment to test my theory. Give one group a list of web addresses with words example dot com and the control group example.com and see who remembers more.

Experience

I have an honours science degree in Psychology and I am a trained counsellor. I have a masters degree in Social Work. I worked as a Probation Officer for ten years in inner city high crime patch in London. I had 3 murderers on my caseload. I set up and ran an alcohol abuse training course that the courts could sentence to. I did 14 hour shifts in a secure bail hostel on my own. For two years. My reports were used to train magistrates.

I have been around the world, mostly overland. It took ten years. I went to India via the Nile…true story!

I am bipolar.

I have survived lung cancer.

Computing

I had my first computer in 1981. In 1986 I helped programme and install a networked touch sensitive computer system for Manpower Services Commission a British government body to access a database, in real time, of job vacancies nationwide. In those days the “computer scientists” in MSC were a bunch of psychologists, the only ones to understand the system. It is now (?) used in every job centre in England well that was in the days of MSC now gone *sigh*.

In 1994 I built my first PC from scratch. In 1996 I set us up as an ISP (Internet Service Provider) with two web servers and two name servers which were built from scrap. We had a Silicon Graphics work station as used by NASA to control the Mars lander. In 2000 we offered secure wireless Internet access to the whole town of Tullamore in Ireland. In 2006 we went bust through lack of support and repercussions of the dot com crash.

My YouTube channel which I set up in 2008 has had over 100k views and there are over 400 videos. I have published over 80 documents on Scribd (not written by me) which have had over 60k views. My major sites have a library of select books all out of print copies I have found, including James Joyce Ulysses, Moby Dick etc. available to read online or download. It’s on this site too as I love it so.  My blogs have over 6k subscribers.

Currently I operate a rented web server and name servers and have 25 gTLDs and untold WordPress blogs. The blog linked below took a week to set up including content.

I know what I am doing.

If you don’t blow your own trumpet will someone else? Older Citizens should have a voice, my aim is to give them one.

Our brains still work

“The good news is that far from slowing down in old age, the brain can actually keep growing new dendrites, which are the connections between neurons. Old brains are as plastic as young brains; in fact, the connections between the two hemispheres of our brains become better integrated with age……”

Dr. Natash Josefowitz “On becoming 90” Huffington Post

Yet there are some failings as Dr.Josefowitz points out in the excellent article. I find, myself, memories of 50 or more years ago can be quite fresh but I forget the password I created 5 minutes ago AND I am only 67. I use sticky notes on my computer to remember stuff. So clearly things aren’t perfect. However it doesn’t stop me. My email box is littered with “password reset” notices. No big deal. This has been recognised by the powers that be and I can log on using a one click Facebook login.

You can teach an old dog new tricks

I blog a lot and I find it keeps my brain ticking over nicely. I learn new stuff everyday and the important bits I retain. So the idea that learning stops at a certain age is a fallacy. So with this in mind I decided to teach blogging to older citizens and that it can be done. There is a noticeable lack of older citizens blogging and this needs changing. It helps greatly that with a computer and access to the Internet this is not difficult. It could be done in a library, It takes minutes to set up a wordpress blog. When you are in wordpress dot com “If it doesn’t exist register it” . How Zen! People use their name which makes it easy to remember. Given that there are there are approximately over 150 million blogs on the Internet getting a name may pose some problems however marionjwinslow for example or billwatkinssuperblog are probably available. Just need a bit of imagination.

Capitals are ok

The web treats capitals as lower case so when you are writing the name of your blog you can write it as MarionJWilson or BillsSuperBlog which makes it that more memorable when people read it. They don’t have to write it in capitals as a link BUT IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE! So be imaginative and you can write a short but memorable sentence. MaybeOldButWhoCares is a potential blog address, it is memorable and that is the important thing. When chatting with friends you can say “MaybeOldButWhoCares dot wordpress dot com” and they will remember it. (By the way the teaching blog I have set up on wordpress is 100% free and there is no reason to spend any money).

Imagination

So I registered it. Any Older Citizen who wants it let me know in the comments and I'll give them a login

So I registered it. Any Older Citizen who wants it let me know in the comments and I’ll give them a login

Research

After an extensive trawl I can find no research that has investigated cognition and blogging in the older citizen. Nor the potential impact on feelings of isolation and exclusion. Nor on the potential impact on family life. If a persons mother starts putting up pictures of when they were a child or writing about a holiday they had in 1965; anything that gives the son or daughter an historical perspective will bring families closer.

I have a very old family album which goes back to 1949 – 1952 and I used my camera phone to take a picture of the photograph. I then uploaded it to my computer and added it to my blog. Any family picture can be put in a blog.

A free wordpress blog is there in perpetuity not so people. If you have left a blog as a legacy how uplifting it can be. There needs to be research on the impact of blogging on mood. As the population ages, older citizens are a potential resource that shouldn’t be ignored.

Me and Mum 1949

The good old days

I read an interesting article on Facebook by an 86 year old who was lamenting the passing of an age in England that was post WW2 a time of the creation of free health care, a boom in affordable housing, education blossoming and freely available work. Its on my blog. After watching I, Daniel Blake it makes you wonder about the value we put on citizens today. Older citizens can take the values of yesterday and resurrect them for today’s generation and demand a return to things we hold dear. Compassion and honesty being the watch words. Daniel Blake received no compassion.

Older Citizens on WordPress

So I have set up a teaching blog for getting older citizens blogging. I have used video extensively with text support; a complimentary oldercitizens dot com and a quick start dot org. I am in the process of propagating it globally (why not?) and have plans to set up complimentary country sub domains on the dot com. It took me a week to set up the three sites including content so not much reaction yet. This is a free service not a business. No profit is being asked for nor made. Below is a video I made for adding your first post. Please watch full screen.

First Post

The Blog

There are four main sections to get you started

  1. Setting up and registering your blog
  2. Your first post
  3. Inserting an image and embedding a video
  4. Changing the theme

There are also sundry pages:

  • Contact
  • Useful Programs including the free Microsoft Expression Design image editor
  • A page on Widgets
  • And a Library of books (pdfs for online reading or download) which I love and put on all my sites including this one.
  • About Me

Yes a weeks work indeed…..

High hopes

This may take some time but having retired I have time, its a hobby as well as I hope a valued service. Getting noticed on the Internet is not easy and I know this. I put up my first web page in 1996 (its still there in Archives) and during a five year period as an ISP (Internet Service Provider) I am no stranger to the web. I rent my own web server and name servers so I know what I’m doing. The cost is minimal, a few Euro a week. What I am doing now is spreading the word so please visit the site leave a comment or fill out the form provided. I need feedback so I can improve. Nothing is set in stone and I will respond to both criticism and praise but I have high hopes. Hope you enjoyed this hub, there is a poll……

Tablet

My computer won’t run Second Life because there is a fault in the motherboard (RAM sockets). I am buying a new computer but don’t know when, it could be a month or it could be three. So I decided to buy a tablet. I chose from three and picked the one with the most powerful spec :

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 ME173X …

ASUS MEMOPAD ME173X, MediaTek MT8125 CPU 1.2Ghz Quad-core, 1 Micro USB, 16GB Storage, 7″ HD Display (ME173X-1B018A)

One reason I chose the Asus was because my gf has an Asus laptop. A good name in computing.

It cost €125 and is a nice piece of tech. I bought from Elara in Ireland and got it in 4 days.  Here is the first screen:

Screenshot_2014-05-25-06-26-13

The blue upside down triangle on the left is Lumiya, the sl client for tablets.  Installation as with all tablet widgets was fast and easy. Once installed you have a settings page with some usual features like changing rendering , draw distance etc. Rendering is a bit slow but not too bad.

Screenshot_2014-05-25-06-46-20You have the option of 3D view like the above. You can also chat as below:

Screenshot_2014-05-25-10-31-10

This is fine but when you want to chat the keyboard takes up a lot of room:

Screenshot_2014-05-25-09-20-52

I have decided to get a Bluetooth keyboard..

Overall its quite awesome and very usable. With practice it will do the job and I hosted with it for 4 hours. Not bad at all.

Bite The Bullet

Yes I have to give up. I’ve tried everything to make 8 gigs of RAM work on my computer without success. People at Firestorm they have Jira where you can post your problems but I didn’t really get anywhere. I tried everything. I’m running 64 bit windows with 4 gigs of RAM and it works, for now. But I have lost confidence in it. My current system is over 5 years old, so it’s ready for replacement. So I’m going to buy a new PC.

Another Dell

Base is an XPS 8700 i7 – 4770 4th Gen 3.7 GHz, which can be overclocked to 3.9 GHz.
This is the current fastest processor around.
Memory 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz – 4 DIMMs can be expanded to 32 gigs
Video Card AMD Radeon HD R9 270 2GB GDDR5 I looked this card up and its pretty good, 2 gigs is good enough memory
(I’m keeping my monitor unless I decide to have two)
Hard Drive 2TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive + Intel SRT 32GB SSD Cache 2 terabytes is good for these days, the solid state Cache speeds things up. I have 3 TB on my USB drives

It has lots of room for expansion. Cost €1,239 inc taxes and shipping

have to wait for new ID so can’t buy until the end of May

Sigh

Blogged in NowChangeYourLife.WordPress.com and eCollege.me:

Crashed three times in the middle of recording a video, sigh. Updated my eCollege dot me site . Crashed another couple of times. Sigh. Then I looked at the clock and it was two minutes to six, I had forgotten to pick up my meds ( don’t worry I have a stash). Sigh. A nice cup of coffee will help but shit remembered I had bought the cheap stuff to save money which I don’t like, stupid! Sigh. Then sent my daughter out to get cream for the christmas pudding that was on sale. The cream cracked in her rucksack and went everywhere. Sigh. So to cheer myself up I updated my eCollege site.Do have a look. I’ve included the post here for my subscribers to this blog.

Been having a troublesome day so……..

I thought I would cheer myself up with some Art. I am more ignorant of Art than I care to mention but I know what I like. Perhaps the most famous paintings I have seen were in the Uffizi gallery in Florence my favourite city in Europe. Of note there is Botticelli’s Venus on a Half Shell:

Botticelli's Birth of Venus reworked on the website annautopiagiordano.it Florence is so beautiful, the square with the statue of David ie wonderful. To sit in the square in an outdoor café, a little stoned, sipping Campari Sodas. Yes sipping because the point is to be with the ambiance without breaking the bank. to be smartly dressed is a must otherwise you will be given a table inside. You have to look cool. You should look like one of The Beautiful People, aging perhaps but aging gracefully. The fact we were camping on the side of hill 5 miles outside town need not be mentioned. The thing is wherever you go you have to blend in. Myself with my 25 year old slim, leggy Japanese wife (well she won’t read this but one of the reasons I married her not because her dad was a millionaire, nor that she had an IQ off the scale but because John Lennon had a Japanese wife; the coolest man ever. ) blended.

Oh dear aren’t I awful. Ooops. Back to Art. You do realise that all Art is generally available on the ‘net? So there is no excuse. Of course, if you must and the fact you are technophiles, you can make it a technology. So I love Kandinsky and below is a slider of his work.

[hislider id=”1″]

Unfortunately HiSlider only works on a self hosted WordPress site. So here is a promo video of the site. I have just learned to use annotations. What do you think?

I love the colours and the integrity. Above should be for reference only – i just love moving pictures.

Nota Bene

I know how to be buy a computer. Probably I got used to people ignoring the box that did all the work but calling the monitor the computer, anyway I bought my first proper computer in 1994. It cost a fortune because i spent half the total price on a 17 inch monitor. You see you spend all your time in front of your monitor, the fastest and biggest computer need not be viewed through a 15 inch monitor. I have a 22 inch wide screen monitor and I run at resolution of 1920 x 1080. Makes sense to me. I live in front of my computer as my environment is not conducive to perambulations. You might find my graphics a tad large but to me they are normal. For example my signature is 36pt.

philipBut to me its ok. A signature should be a tad flamboyant. I have said in Essential Free Graphics how important it is to have a good graphics program without spending months or years on Adobe Photoshop. All my stuff comes from Expression Design from Microsoft. The studio was selling a good few hundred euro but I don’t know why they stopped selling it but now its free. It does the job.

I created :

pennypedestalsign

I did it all except for photoshopping the background of Penny the cat. you can get the rest of the story Not Another Kitten dot com. ” Tails from The Kitten Shop” a damn good read.

Thanks

philipsm

See? (I can do small!!!!)

Thats the end of a very trying day!! Thanks for your time!

Great, I’ll try and meet you in sl

06670f0a-d96d-4537-bcef-7c4a7fe0a6ddI’m still trying to put together my first year in second life but i haven’t been able to get my head around it coz i keep crashing in sl. So far I have spent €250 trying to sort it out. I have had a great deal of support from friends in sl especially from my DJ Siani she came up with great ideas. My gf Storm has been great too. We finally nailed it down to getting a more powerful graphics card. However I know there is another problem but can’t for the life of me find it. My whole computer freezes while in second life. I borrowed this card and I seem to be able to last 5 hours which is great. BUT I still freeze. What has saved my sanity is Skype which has enabled me to stay in touch. Skype is great. My gf lives in Sydney I live in The Bog of Allen in Ireland. We communicate with text and video seamlessly. And of course it is free. Most of the testing programs I have used have been free. I have a Dell and on Dell.com (not Dell.ie) there is a diagnostic program which tests hardware. About a year ago I had the same problem which turned out to be memory. I’ve run a memory program from boot that found nothing. I have lost a great deal of data that couldn’t be backed up such as 200 odd very nice fonts. Also GodKnows.info was destroyed by spammers. Not my month is it? Computers are logical beasts so presumably there is a logical solution. However what happens when you have tried all the logical solutions? Waving incense over the hard disk? The odd mantra being repeated? I dunno . So,  Great I’ll try and meet you in sl….

The Fool

sotonomyLove? HUH!!

Women fall in “love” with me in second life and it always turns out not to be “love”. Not how I define it anyway. I have an attractive avatar, I can be witty and fun in chat. I am intelligent. Well read and intellectual be an asset at a dinner party and can rough it in a swamp. As you can see from my history i have had 4 partners in second life 1 & 2 are hstormcloseere and 3 & 4 are here. potential 5th is listed here and I fell in love with her alt.  She told me she loved me, they all did and I believed them. Well to be honest I didn’t believe the last one but was too enamored to turn her down. How foolish was that? Knew in my gut she wasn’t IN love with me. AND OMG she is the same avatar as Wynter! So You Knew, you  IDIOT! but she is one of the most wonderful people in sl, fucking hard to top. and i blew it. Told  my daughter and my close friends omg what a fool they will think me.  AND I am lost and alone again. Fool. Where am I going wrong? I am loveable I think, warm and caring. I must have something to initiate such a reaction in the first place. AND I have not done all the chasing either……..

So there is something wrong with me, its the only conclusion I can come to. But what and how can I change?  I feel like a fool. Maybe I should just wear my jester costume all the time. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH ME????? I give up on second life.  They have all made a fool out of me, publicly.

My Second Life

It was in April 2012 that I got the all clear about cancer. I rejoined second life on 14th June 2012 after an absence of 3 years. On the 4th November 2012 I registered IrishSecure.com again. On the 12th of December I set up the hosting company around IrishSecure. I wrote a paper on Cyberculture that the few that have seen it, well,  it has been well received and thought to have original ideas. My goal is to get or rather help move second life into the world wide web.

I see no reason why clubs should not have a domain where they can put up advertisements, events and schedules. DJs could like wise have their own sites. Is this difficult? No it takes 10 minutes. Does having a web site take up a lot of time. No it does not its a piece of cake. What are the advantages? With a simple link you can tell your clients exactly what is going on day to day as well as announce special events. It will also serve to drive those new to second life to your venue. I can be of great assistance. AND I will do it for a donation. The strange thing is second life  users seem scared to go onto the world wide web. Why? I dunno. I have gone as far as taking the piss. I believe everyone should have an internet address, just as you would in rl. I believe every group or organisation or club or professional should have a web address. The first question I will ask is : “Why not?”

I have two clients covering 4 domains. The last domain I registered number 45 was fuckim64.com on my 64th birthday. When I was 61 / 62 I did not think I would reach 64. Therefore is is with some amazement that I reached 64. Nor did I think I would become a Domain Registrar again. Yet here I am at 64 with my domains. Here is a video of the domains I have registered, its a bit long 19 minutes but the music is great and can be watched full screen. The music is great.

All in all things are looking bright tho I think much work has to be done. I have not made a dent in second life. I have not made serious effort only feelers. I have become a host in Junkyard Blues and this is going well. I failed miserably with Sideroads.

As to personal domains the research I have done still points to this being a good idea.

8 Reasons Why Having a Personal Domain Name is Essential

  1. Search Engine Rankings
With the world of the web run by Google, Yahoo and Bing, having your own domain automatically places you higher in search engines for your name and in many cases on the first page. Assuming you can secure yourname.com. If you can’t secure a .com, than try .me, .tv, or .info. If you have a common name, then get a name that references your profession like www.merrillmarketer.com or www.digitalmerrill.com. One more reason to secure it now before someone else does.
  2. Professionalism
Having your own domain name and email address provides a higher level of professionalism and trust. If you have your own domain name vs. some long hotmail.com address it instills a higher level of integrity. If you are in marketing or tech it also shows you understand branding and technology and the value of SEO
  3. Brand Recognition and Recall
How much easier is it to remember yourname@yourname.com than Joe356TX@aol.com. More importantly, every email you send is your name. If folks can recall your name when they think of a need they have, you are more likely to get a referral or a sale.
  4. Same Email Address Forever
This one is a no brainer. As I mentioned above, you can now keep your email forever even if you change your ISP or hosting provider. Your domain stays with you as long as you pay the hosting fee every year.  The other added benefit is that jobs may come and go, but your personal email address will always be the same.
  5. Security
Even if you don’t plan to do anything with the domain other than redirect it to your LinkedIn profile, secure it so no one else can. Especially if that person could be some worthless celebrity, convict or questionable politician. Remember, very few folks look past page one on Google.
  6. Advertisement Free Emails
The best thing about having your own domain and email address is you don’t spam your friends with ads with every email you send
  7. Your Homebase on the Internet
If you ever decide to start you own blog or consulting business, you will have a URL you can immediately point your blog to and start promoting.  Your blog becomes the hub of all of your social sites and drives everyone back to content you own forever. Don’t forget to of course back it up.
  8. Just Google Me – Similar to number one, wouldn’t you love to tell folks to “Just Google Me”. Crowd sourced

Of Course I have PhilipFinlayBryan.com
